Recognized today as one of the best vocal jazz groups in Europe , the Voice Messengers combine the energy and swing of a jazz orchestra with the poetic and musical charm of an entirely unique vocal ensemble.
Backed by one of the best French rhythm sections (Gilles Naturel on double bass and Philippe Soirat on drums), and supplied with arrangements by Thierry Lalo (piano and leader), the eight singers take the place of the brass section of a big band - even for vocal improvisation.
The made-to-measure writing style that is the trademark of the Voice Messengers highlights the personality of each singer in an extremely eclectic repertoire that includes pieces from contemporary jazzmen like Glenn Ferris and Tom Harrell alongside thoroughly revisited standards by Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Horace Silver, to name only a few.
Emotion and poetry play important roles in their universe, with the notable inclusion of a selection of French poems by Baudelaire, Apollinaire, Milosz and others, set to music by Thierry Lalo in an innovative way that elegantly combines jazz with the French language.
