Recognized today as one of the best vocal jazz groups in Europe , the Voice Messengers combine the energy and swing of a jazz orchestra with the poetic and musical charm of an entirely unique vocal ensemble.
Backed by one of the best French rhythm sections (Gilles Naturel on double bass and Philippe Soirat on drums), and supplied with arrangements by Thierry Lalo (piano and leader), the eight singers take the place of the brass section of a big band - even for vocal improvisation.
The made-to-measure writing style that is the trademark of the Voice Messengers highlights the personality of each singer in an extremely eclectic repertoire that includes pieces from contemporary jazzmen like Glenn Ferris and Tom Harrell alongside thoroughly revisited standards by Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Horace Silver, to name only a few.
Emotion and poetry play important roles in their universe, with the notable inclusion of a selection of French poems by Baudelaire, Apollinaire, Milosz and others, set to music by Thierry Lalo in an innovative way that elegantly combines jazz with the French language.
"An absolutely exceptional vocal group. They are the only vocal group of their kind at present, but they represent the best anyone could wish to hear France ." André Francis (producer and journalist).
"Homogeneity, structure, phrasing and swing are all there! Yep! The Voice Messengers really are the voice messengers." Mimi Perrin, founder of Les Double Six .
"Their arrangements are of a high quality and their soloists improvise with impressive ease. It is really, really good work." Ward Swingle (founder of the Swingle Singers ).
"Sumptuous from beginning to end" Jazz Notes
"Bull's-eye!" Renaud Czarnes, La Croix
"An undisputed reference " Guillaume Rondelet, MFA
